houdon ecorche

A beautiful old Houdon ecorché in need of serious repair.
The legs were cracked through in many places. The feet, ankles and left arm required some re-sculpting. The right arm was missing entirely. I drilled out the cracks in the legs and filled with wire and burlap. The cast now stands solidly.
Right arm is detachable for transport and storage, see other pics.

A quarter-scale Caproni Brothers copy of the 4th Century BC Greek sculpture by Cephisodotus, falling apart, with earlier bad restoration using epoxy, window putty and some kind of concrete. Multiple paint/shellac layers flaking off.
Base cracked through and figures not attached to it. Lower figure missing large parts of left arm and torso; arm not attached; left leg badly damaged and missing around the knee where it contacts base. Upper figure needed parts of right arm and toes.

This nice old cast of Houdon's bust of Alexander Hamilton was worth restoring.
It was smashed to bits, basically, and someone had done a terrible job of sticking it back together again with Elmer's. It was still in several pieces when I started in on it.
I attached the head and reinforced inside the whole piece with burlap. The previous restoration was re-aligned as well as possible, and extensive patching and smoothing has resulted in a fine job that will be invisible when painted.
